From 19 March 2021 Palazzo Strozzi will change face through the intervention of JR, one of the most famous contemporary artists in the world, called to reinterpret the facade of one of the symbols of the Renaissance in Florence through a new site specific installation entitled "The wound", Which will propose a suggestive reflection on the accessibility to cultural sites in the era of Covid-19.

JR uses the photo collage as a characteristic technique of his style, which exploded into the dimension of public art in cities all over the world. As the artist himself states: “I have the largest imaginable art gallery: the walls of the whole world”. His research combines originality and appropriation, always distinguishing himself for a strong public and participatory connotation that has led him to create works of great visual impact and involvement in ever-changing places and contexts, from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the great square of the Pyramid of the Louvre, from Ellis Island in New York to Tehachapi maximum security prison in California.

Palazzo Strozzi it stands out for its desire to create a dialogue between ancient and contemporary through the involvement of artists who know how to interpret the present, he declares Arturo Galansino, General Manager of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation.

JR's new work represents a strong signal of reflection on the difficult conditions of access to culture in the era of Covid-19 but at the same time an opportunity for a new involvement of the public in the name of values such as freedom, creative imagination and participation. . In the current difficulty of offering opportunities for the enjoyment of art in traditional spaces, the choice to create a work visible to anyone on the façade of Palazzo Strozzi becomes an invitation to rediscover a direct relationship with art and a solicitation for new forms of sharing and participation.

The initiative is promoted and organized by the Palazzo Strozzi and Andy Bianchedi Foundation in memory of Hillary Merkus Recordati. Palazzo Strozzi Foundation Supporters: Municipality of Florence, Tuscany Region, Florence Chamber of Commerce, CR Florence Foundation, Palazzo Strozzi Partner Committee, Intesa Sanpaolo Thanks to Galleria Continua for collaborating with the JR project.
