The Preview of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is back as every year, but this year was a very special edition. In the Fortress about 60 journalists (against the usual 150) from all over the world and from all over Italy. The Preview was the occasion for the announcement of the rating for the 2020 vintage and to make known the new vintages on the market, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2018 and the 2017 Reserves.

Five stars (the maximum) for the 2020 vintage of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The ceremony took place on Tuesday 18 May, on the occasion of the Preview of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which this year took place exceptionally in a reduced form and in a new period for the presentation of the wines.

A nice surprise from the 2018 vintage of the Nobile, a general uniformity on quality, which I believe to be of a medium-high level, a return to the classic by many producers, who tend to prefer a style that leads to wines that are ready to drink, with fruity balanced, sweet and well developed tannins. The tertiary notes are well integrated in almost all the wines tasted, never suffocating of the fruit, really interesting points of excellence.

The Braccesca | ⭐⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with purple reflections, juicy red fruit, bright notes of cinnamon and licorice and a pleasant mentholated finish. Fresh sip, with an intense, persistent acidic shoulder.

Ancient Hill | ⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with orange reflections, dark fruit on the nose, hints of coffee and notes of licorice. Full and relaxed sip with references to the undergrowth, and a well-balanced acidity. Well developed tannins.

Abbadia Vecchia estate | ⭐⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with purple reflections, a wide and elegant and fruity nose with hints of cherry and morello cherry and a fine green spice. Satisfying sip, perfect balance between soft and hard notes. Gastronomic !!!

Le Berne | ⭐⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​color, ripe fruit with notes of blackberry and cherry in alcohol, rich and round palate, with happy hints of vanilla and coffee.

Bindella | ⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with violet reflections, shy nose with mineral hints, ripe red fruit and leather. Lively palate, with flavors of currant and red fruits. Gastronomic !!!

Intense ruby ​​red with violet reflections, lively nose with hints of violet and cherry, harmonious palate and fleshy pulp, well developed tannins.

Podere della bruciata "Cesiro" | ⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with violet reflections, red flowers and mineral scents on the nose, palate with a marked acidity and a tannin still to be refined.

The Ciarliana | ⭐⭐

Very intense ruby, round nose with hints of violets and toasted notes. Rich and clean sip, with references to geranium. Good persistence

Poliziano | ⭐⭐⭐

Intense ruby ​​red with violet reflections, mineral nose with hints of black currant and black cherry, fresh and relaxed sip.

During the preview, the project of the new type of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was officially presented to the press, mentioning "Pieve" which, once the disciplinary approval process has been completed, will be able to enter the market as early as 2024, twelve areas included in this selection: Cervognano, Cerliana, Caggiole, S. Albiano, Valiano, Ascianello, San Biagio, Le Grazie, Gracciano, Badia, Argiano, Valardegna.

"A new type of Vino Nobile, a project that highlights the desire to anchor wine even more to a unique territory." - he says Andrea Rossi, president of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Consortium - “We want to highlight the expressions of Sangiovese according to territoriality. An ambitious project carried out by the consortium in a cohesive way, demonstrating the great will of the producers of noble wine to face the revival of the denomination in a modern key but also thinking about its history and traditions. "

The specification indicates that for the Montepulciano Selection Le Pievi at least 85% of Sangiovese must be used together with other native vines for the remaining 15, with a limitation for Colorino to a maximum of 5% with the obligation to make at least 12 months in wood and 12 in bottle.
