We talk a lot about globalization. In history there have been at least two phases of globalization: between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and immediately after the Second World War. From the nineties until almost today, the third, stronger wave followed, the one we have all come to know.

The growing integration international economic which, led by technology information, prompted many enterprises in advanced countries to transfer labor-intensive production to developing countries, resulted in the greatest acceleration of business international and also the transfer of ideas, thus creating a social, cultural, customs and thought integration never before seen in history.

This integration was then accompanied by the liberalization of capital flows international, which some have called the financialization of the economy.

Everything has changed in economic relations between nations and within each nation. Economic and then social and finally political. Because globalization has affected everyone's daily life.

Today it is now recognized everywhere that globalization is not necessarily all shiny gold. Already the economic financial crisis of 2007-2008 has generated in advanced countries backlashes which have been transmitted from the economy to societies with also political consequences. Brexit and Trump can also be explained in this way.

Move entire production cycles to distant and more backward countries (the relocation, offshoring), increase the automation of work, certainly save costs and increase productivity but can create some problems. One word is enough: inequality or, if you prefer, we can say disparity economic. In advanced countries it has become a very hot topic. We speak openly of crisis of liberal democracies under the weight of its consequences.

The pandemic COVID-19 it has accelerated all this even more with its very heavy consequences on the economies of the world. And it induced profound second thoughts. Many are wondering if a different economic model, more sustainable. It is no coincidence that many argue that globalization as we have known it so far will never be the same again.

Today we think about “good” and sustainable capitalism, on broader social responsibilities, on other factors to be taken into account, in addition to the pure remuneration of the entrepreneur and shareholders. No more pure and simple growth, but Sustainable Development. That is, a socially and environmentally sustainable growth that is able to satisfy the needs of the present without compromising the ability to satisfy those of future generations.

All this suggests that perhaps the global should be tempered with a lot local. The vision of a global world enveloped in a dense network of commerce, interconnected by the digital network, must be balanced with the enhancement of the premises, with no less important supervision of local interests.

Let's take ours Tuscany.. It excels in beauty e culture, the admiration of the whole world. It excels in everything that moves thanks to them, the tourism industry in all its infinite features. But it also has a manufacturing sector respectable made of quality productions ad high added value and of a good technological level. Her exports they have so far been an important component of the region's economic well-being.

Le agri-food supply chains court enhance the territorio, point to the quality of products and therefore of food, not to pure saving of production costs. They therefore have a greater response to the increasingly felt needs of quality foods that help ours health and respect theenvironment. The pandemic has made that clearer quality and proximity of products they are crucial.

In Tuscany we have the beauty and culture and also the ability to do, and to do well, that we recognize and envy in every part of the world. We need to support them, make their life easier, enhance the Tuscan identity.

The active, efficient, continuous presence of state institutions is necessary, both in the center and in the periphery. But one is just as necessary open entrepreneurial mindset and not conservative, strongly collaborative, pay attention totechnological and organizational innovation.

Digital technology can be of great help to innovate production methods and ability to relate to the whole world. High quality production that enhances all the positive local characteristics. And that conveys the Tuscan identity to the world.
